Level Up Your Language Learning with Spaced Repetition (SRS)
Level Up Your Language Learning with Spaced Repetition (SRS) Remember that time you crammed information for an exam?(Dont worry, weve all been there.)You, like many others, may have spent an all-nighter memorizing every page of your notes and trying desperately to make up for countless days you decided to hold off on studying. While you may have performed well on the exam, think about how much you recalled a few weeks after the test date. How much of that information did you remember? If youre like most humans, the answer is probably not very much. Wait, So Cramming a New Language Wont Work? You can try, but unfortunately you wont get very far if you try to learn the Spanish subjunctive tense in one night. Now, you may wonder, if I was able to recall information so well at the time of an exam, why has it dropped from my memory soon after?Well, theres science behind this! Research proves that cramming intense amounts of information into our brain in a short period of time is not an effective way for long-term learning.British author H.E. Gorst mentioned in his book The Course of Education that cramming is what produce[s] mediocrity. Yikes. What he means is that cramming doesnt provide us with the ability to think critically and effectively apply our knowledge in creative ways.Yet cramming is still becoming more and more popular among students of all ages.If Its So Ineffective, Why Do We Cram?Fingers point to improper time management as the number one cause. If we better prioritize our time, we can more efficiently learn new information. By cramming, we may absorb information that can be easily regurgitated the following day. But say goodbye to that information because its going to disappear at an exponential rate as time goes on.Cramming trades a strong memory now for a weak memory later. Unfortunately, we sometimes cling to short-term gratifications and fail to strive for long-term benefits. Before you banish all hope for your memory, theres an alternative method to learning that may give your brain the love it needs. In psychology, there is a theory of memorization and learning called the spacing effect. The spacing effect is the idea that we remember and learn items more effectively when they are studied a few times over a long span of time.Is Frequent Repetition the Solution? Not Quite.Since cramming is out the window, you may think its smarter to study material over and over again. Its crucial to note that, while repetition is important, not all repetition is created equally. Youll want to space out the repetitions between each time you study a set of information. But determining how long to wait in between studying can also be a tricky matter. If you practice too soon, your brain will begin passively remembering information, which will not stick over time. If you practice too late, you will have forgotten the material and have to spend extra time relearning it. Add to this the complexity of individual learning and memorization patterns, and you have a recipe for guaranteed memory loss.Thankfully , there are softwares available today to help us pin-point the sweet spot of optimal learning. Just when our forgetfulness dips below a certain level, these programs jump in and keep our brains on track. How cool is that?Spaced Repetition Software to the RescueSpaced repetition software (SRS) are computer programs modeled after a process similar to using flashcards. Users enter items to be memorized into the program, which are then converted into electronic decks that appear on-screen in a one-by-one sequential pattern.Usually, the user clicks one time to reveal the question or front of the generated card. A second click will reveal the answer or back of the flashcard. Upon seeing the answer, the user then indicates the difficulty of the card by telling the program how challenging it was. Each following cards order of appearance is not randomized. In fact, SRS programs use algorithms to space out the time intervals indicated when each card will appear again on the screen. Cards given easy ratings will appear later than cards given hard ratings, thus allowing users to spend more time studying the cards that are more difficult. The tough ones will show up more often until they are mastered, giving you the chance to actively learn them more efficiently than other learning styles.Using Spaced Repetition for Language LearningTo put this into context, lets pretend you spend an evening studying 100 Mandarin words you didnt know before. You continue studying until youve completely memorized the words. Lets say it takes you an hour to do this.Immediately after reviewing these words, your memory of them will be quite high. However, over time you will naturally begin forgetting the material you learned. And, since it was your first time learning these words, your use-it-or-lose-it brain is more likely to ditch this new material at a faster pace. The new knowledge isnt yet considered important enough to be etched into your brain cells. However, the second time you study the same words, it will take you less time to master the set than it did the first time. Perhaps this time it only takes you 30 minutes to memorize the 100 words. Congratulations! Youve completed your first spaced repetition. So, does this mean youll have to keep repeating the information you want to learn for the rest of your life? Not exactly. While it does require long-term review to keep information fresh on our minds, the time spent on review becomes shorter and less frequent over time. With each successive review, it will take you less and less time to fully recall the information. As you begin mastering a set of words, youll find yourself whizzing through each card. Eventually, information will become so memorable that we know it by heart. This is when you know youre ready to move onto a new, more challenging deck.Get Your SRS Game On!Thankfully, millions of people around the world enjoy using a variety of free applications available today that use spaced repetition learning.AnkiA nki is one of the most popular spaced repetition softwares. Named after the Japanese word for memorization, Anki allows users to create their own decks of cards or download pre-made decks by other users. One popular feature of Anki is the ability to sync decks across multiple devices, allowing users to study online or on their cell phones. Anki also stores your statistics for each deck so that you can track your progress over time.FluentUFluentU is a bit different from the other services mentioned here. FluentU takes real-world videos like music videos, movie trailers, news and inspiring talks, and turns them into language learning experiences. What makes it relevant here is that it has a very robust SRS systemâ"based on a variation of the SM2 SuperMemo algorithm (like Anki). What makes it different is that you are able to easily import words, and then you can automatically see images, definitions and example sentences that have been written for each of those words. And thats not al l. You can even see how the word is used in different videos throughout the site. This is all packaged in a smooth feature that tracks your history and provides new and different video clip prompts based on your previous history on FluentU. Its a smooth marriage of spaced repetition and learning through context and personalization. If youre tired of filling up your flashcards and searching for good examples, then FluentU might be what youre looking for.FluentU has a wide variety of videos like movie trailers, funny commercials and web series, as you can see here:FluentU App Browse Screen.FluentU has interactive captions that let you tap on any word to see an image, definition, audio and useful examples. Now native language content is within reach with interactive transcripts.Didnt catch something? Go back and listen again. Missed a word? Hover your mouse over the subtitles to instantly view definitions.Interactive transcript for Carlos Baute song. You can learn all the vocabulary in any video with FluentUs learn mode. Swipe left or right to see more examples for the word youâre learning.FluentU Has Quizzes for Every VideoAnd FluentU always keeps track of vocabulary that youâre learning. It uses that vocab to give you a 100% personalized experience by recommending videos and examples.Start using FluentU on the website with your computer or tablet or, better yet, download the FluentU app from the iTunes or Google Play store.SuperMemoSuperMemo is another learning software that uses spaced repetition learning methods. Electronic flashcards can be self-made, downloaded from a pre-made collection, or in some cases merged together. After users are presented with a card, they must respond and then give themselves a grade that reflects their recall ability. SuperMemo uses this feedback to calculate the interval length for the card to be repeated.Self-discipline Ultimately Trumps AllRemember, while these programs may have wonderful language learning techniqu es, they wont be effective unless you have the self-discipline to use them on an ongoing basis.Make it a habit to open up and use the softwares mentioned above. If you set aside some time every day to do your SRS studying, youll see noticeable results sooner than you might imagine.Frank Macri works with those looking to create off the beaten path lifestyles. Using Aggarwal Chemistry to Create New ThingsAggarwal Chemistry has made a large impact on the way we look at creating and looking at new products. It is so much more than just a science of turning substances into ones.Aggarwal Chemistry is not just about using chemistry to make something. It is about using chemistry to look at what you are working with in an entirely different way. It is about looking at the materials that we use every day and seeing how they interact with other materials, how they form and decay. How can these materials be used in new ways? Where will they fit? Where can they be combined with other materials to create something completely new? The answer to all of these questions is 'in chemistry'.When we think of Chemistry it often takes the form of a vat with masses of ingredients suspended in a liquid. Aggarwal Chemistry is about is seeing how these mass materials are used in different ways. For example, in Chemistry the process of mixing two substances is known as mixtures.Aggarwal Chemistry looks at how these mixtures are created. Is it better to combine a compound with one substance or with another? Aggarwal sees the principles of mixtures and how they are used and transform this idea into something more tangible. In Honor Of Amps That Go Up To 11...
In Honor Of Amps That Go Up To 11... Suzy S. If youâre a fan of the rock mockumentary This is Spinal Tap, you know the significance of 11 â" you know, one louder than 10? Itâs a big deal, folks. So much so that fans have dubbed today, 11/11 among other things Nigel Tufnel Day in honor of that special amplifier. (Check out the iconic movie clip here.) So today, crank your volume up to 11 and check out these other LOUD things in rock roll history: Loudest Song Shorter Than Two Seconds Grindcore, a particularly grating subgenre of hardcore punk, is often characterized by loud, brief songs. You Suffer, a 1987 song from genre trailblazers Napalm Death, holds the Guinness World Record for shortest song ever recorded, at 1.316 seconds. Appropriately enough, it was chosen as the bands debut single, released as a 7 on Earache Records. Loudest Mouths In Rock Oasis bandmates Liam and Noel Gallagher have been publicly feuding since the groups first American tour in 1994 (and thats not including the bros personal squabbles before Oasis). While younger brother Liam handled vocal duties, older brother Noel wrote the bands music and generally controlled their creative direction. But egos and grudges got in the way quickly, leading to public fights (including a recorded argument on a 1995 bootleg single and Liams last minute withdrawal from Oasis 1996 MTV Unplugged performance), personal ridicule, and constant conflict thats never let up since the bands start. Even after Noel quit the band in 2009 to start his own solo project, Noel Gallaghers High Flying Birds, the siblings have hardly backed down, and it seems we can never go a few months without another outburst. Loudest Rapper Alive Theres nothing quiet about DMX. When he speaks, it sounds like hes yelling. So when hes yelling, you definitely pay attention. When Complex magazine did their ranking of Loudest Rappers Ever, DMX took the crown from other rambunctious rhymers like Lil Jon and Mystikal. Thats a pretty deafening statement. Loudest Band Known to Hold Audiences Hostage A lot of loud, aggressive bands came out of New Yorks early 80s new wave punk scene, though the loudest and most aggressive were probably Swans, whose early shows were sometimes shut down by police due to threatening decibel levels. Said frontman Michael Gira: There was one European show in a barn that only held 400 people. The stage wasnt wide enough to put the entire PA in front, so we put half of it in the front and half of it at the back, so the audience was smashed between! The walls, ceiling, everything was shaking, raining down years of collected dust. That was good. Loudest Band (International) Guitar Wolf live the loud life (say that six times). These three guys from Japan playing fast and furious garage inspired punk rock may be something that could potentially cause hearing damage. In fact, their 1999 album Jet Generation is said to be so loud that Matador Records claimed that The levels exceeded the theoretical maximum possible on compact disk audio. In other words, Jet Generation is the loudest CD in history. These guys definitely turn it up. Check out the full list of 11 Loud Moments in Music on Billboard.com. Selling Yourself in an Interview Without Selling at All - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Selling Yourself in an Interview Without âSellingâ at All - Introvert Whisperer Selling Yourself in an Interview Without âSellingâ at All Career Attraction August 18, 2014 Communication, Self-Promotion No responses Go to top For any company that has a winning attitude, nothing matters more than getting the right people in the right positions. Therefore, as a job applicant, during the interview process, you must make a compelling case that you are intelligent, competent, autonomous and knowledgeable in the desired areas. However, itâs a catch-22. If you come across as attempting to convince an interviewer that you possess these qualities, youâre much more likely to appear desperate rather than well-rounded. Essentially, the moment you begin to directly brag and display fake arrogance is the moment you lose an interviewerâs interest and your attractiveness as a job candidate. People hate being sold, and hiring managers, recruiters, and HR representatives are just people, after all. This begs the question: How one goes about influencing a hiring manager without coming across as disingenuous and needy for a job? The answer is subtlety. The only way you can âsellâ the interviewer is to let them draw their own conclusions about you. Luckily, there are certain things you can do to increase the odds that their conclusions about hiring you will be positive and welcoming. Below, youâll find some key information that will allow you to sell yourself without actually âsellingâ yourself. Sell Without Saying a Word When an interviewer meets you, they instantaneously categorize you as a winner or loser, sometimes simply by how you present yourself. Use this knowledge to your advantage and let your looks, posture, and facial expression sell for you prior to even speaking your first word. For instance, when you greet an interviewer with a full smile and alert eyes, they are much more likely to associate you with positive qualities. Your facial expression should say, âI like you.â People like others who like them and tend to associate those people with desirable qualities such as integrity and competency. Which means theyâre much more eager to want these people around the office. Regarding dress, know that opposites do not attract. Youâre not likely to be perceived well at a bank if you underdress for the interview. Donât intentionally stick out. It will not build the desired rapport you need. Familiarity breeds fondness. Moreover, studies have shown that matching posture and movements build trust and mutual respect. Without being obvious, do your best to mirror the interviewerâs body language. The Most Effective Interviewing Preparation People (interviewers included) are interested in themselves and their own needs. Therefore, if you donât know what your audience or a hiring manager wants, you canât sell them. Luckily, the job description will give you more evidence than you need to formulate an accurate thesis as to what this person wants in an employee. For instance, if a job description states the employer wants someone who is autonomous, take time the evening before the interview to write down a story or example of your autonomy. With that example in mind, work it into the conversation at the appropriate time. Through the anecdote, the hiring manager will naturally see that you are the type of person who will allow them to focus less on managing you and more on the necessary tasks they need to be done. If they list a certain skill you have in-depth expertise with, formulate questions that display your knowledge of the topic. Donât wait until the end of the interview to present these inquiries, as an interviewerâs assessment of you is likely to be firmly set by then. Rather, ask away when the topic is touched upon. During the Interview Speak without criticism; nobody wants to be around a pessimistic person. Interviewers are more readily sold by those who have a positive, happy outlook and perspective on life. In a genuine manner, convey thoughts that discuss success and, rather than talking about insurmountable hurdles, discuss how you plan to overcome any obstacles. Utilize your rate of speech as an influential measure. When youâre making important points during the interview, itâs helpful to pause for a second after each statement and allow the hiring manager to mentally digest what you just stated. In the End The phrase sell yourself is popular when it comes to the job search. The basic idea is sound, but too many people lose any nuance in the attempted execution. Selling yourself, when it comes to interviewing, is really about paying attention to the cues you receive and send, both before and during the interview. Concentrate less on selling yourself and more on putting your best foot forward How do you like to build a rapport with an interviewer? Share your best tips in the comments! Why Study Economics
Why Study Economics Reasons to Select Economics as Your Field of Study ChaptersUnderstanding EconomicsEconomics and Unintended ConsequencesA Career in EconomicsWhy Study Economics?American president Donald Trump has gone into tariff-slapping mode: against his country's allies as well as presumed arch-enemies such as China â" his latest target in the alleged trade imbalance row.He is slapping tariffs on just about everything, causing ire amongst friend and foe alike. Why is he doing that?If you knew anything about economics, you might divine that answer.Especially in today's world, where grains of potential profit promptly scatter on the increasingly desolate beaches of Gross Domestic Product, to be pulverised by wave after wave of corporate inversion...As a student of Economics, you would understand the dire forecasts engendered by rising nationalist sentiment, restricted trade initiatives and even the America pulling out of the Paris Climate Accord.Yes, economists are modelling those hypotheses even as we speak! As you can see by the 3 instances of cur rent and ongoing events just mentioned, economics covers far more than just the laws of supply and demand and how people spend their money.Mainstream society perceives economics as one of the dullest, least engaging subjects to major in, let alone carve one's life work out of.Economics is neither sexy nor high-profile, yet it is a science vital to the progression of humankind.Wouldn't you like to be on the forefront of a paradigm shift where the study and application of economic theory are concerned?First, you have to know why it is crucial that economics study be well-regarded, more widely accepted and better understood. Thus, the farmer whose existence depends on environmental economics â" the study of land and local resources, would be subject to less disruption than the affluent Londoner, whose economic status depends almost wholly on societal perception and values. You may fear the ponderous math involved in economics study and practice.Indeed: you will see extensive calculus an d other higher math in your curriculum, especially if you are an undergraduate, working on your Bachelor of Science degree.A Bachelor of Arts in economics is less demanding of mathematical skills, but you must still master a sizable quantity of maths, as well as statistical analysis. However, your degree programme's elective courses will delve into the fascinating realm of the human psyche to help you understand why people at all levels of society make the choices they do.On the way, you will understand yourself, and the world around you, better. In addition to understanding the choices you make, you will gain insight into how best to manage financial affairs.By studying economic indicators you could make sound decisions on investments and mortgages. By tracking interest rates, you will better be able to weather winds of change in global markets. In short: you will have the edge over that impulsive Knightsbridge dweller who felt compelled to display his status, rather than secure it.U nintended consequences of financial decisions are far greater than those of a coffee spill! Source: Pixabay Credit: Steve PbEconomics and Unintended ConsequencesRecently in the news: the government of Seattle, in the U.S. state of Washington, proposed levying a jobs tax on major corporations to alleviate homelessness.Global companies headquartered there, such as Amazon and Starbucks, were incensed! This tax initiative caused those billion-dollar enterprises to rethink hiring expansions, and even to talk about moving out of that region altogether.Their abandoning that city would cause economic chaos: job loss â" or, at least a cap on hiring should they decide to stay, as well as loss of revenue to the cityâs coffers and loss of income for individual consumers. Those are what is known as unintended consequences. In principle, the idea of housing every homeless person desiring a home is laudable. However, the unintended consequence of targeting the cityâs largest employers for funding signals a potential reversal of economic growth for the city as a whole.Likewise, economic issues post-Brexit are direly forecast: the uncertainty surrounding current negotiations might result in the UK not having a free-trade agreement by the date Englandâs departure from the conglomerate.Wouldnât you, as an economics major, jump at the chance of formulating an economic analysis of such a scenario, including economic problems our country would face if Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to remain as members of the European Union? You might say that broader job requirement of the economist is to build models that uncover unforeseen consequences of political and financial decisions and help to find ways around them.If your graduate study takes you into that wide range of economic research, you would have job security for life!A Career in EconomicsFar from the stereotype of tweed-wearing academics sporting eyeglasses, the economics degree holder may branch out into any of several career fields:finance and bankingpolitics and public policysales and marketingcivil serviceinsurance and actuaryIf office work does not appeal to you, you might continue your studies, completing your postgraduate work in political science, business economics or specialising in market research. All of those adverts that pop up on your phone or tablet are a direct result of such research! You may work abroad, using your knowledge of development economics, to compile statistics for firms wishing to invest in those countriesâ growth.Or, you might want to stay close to home and focus on labour economics â" a hot topic just now.Why is there such a pay gap between genders? Why do workers stay for years in unsatisfying jobs instead of seeking out what they would really like to do â" like youâre doing? And what economic factors go into making such choices?Or you may select econometrics as your career vehicle of choice.
